Joseph A. “Pesky” Pescatello, 86, of Pawcatuck, passed away on Monday, January 20th, 2014 at the Westerly Hospital with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Josephine R. (DiPiazzo) Pescatello. He was born in Waterbury, CT, the adopted son of the late Paul and Rose Pescatello. He served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carriers USS Oriskany and USS Shangri-la. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he served in the US Coast Guard Reserve. Upon leaving the service, Mr. Pescatello worked at Electric Boat, then became the proprietor of Pesky’s Variety Store. He owned and operated the Credit Bureau of Pawcatuck and finished his career as credit manager at Soundings Publications. Pesky was very active in the Lions Club, holding the offices of President of the Pawcatuck Lions Club and District Governor (23-C) in Connecticut. He was a member of the Maria Assunta Society, The Knights Of Columbus, and the Stonington Democratic Town Committee. He also served as Town Treasurer in Stonington for many years. He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Pawcatuck. Joe was an avid wind-surfer, golfer, card player and bowler, once bowling the elusive 300 game. He could be found most Sundays after mass in front of the stove making fried dough for anyone lucky enough to stop by. He leaves his son Wayne J. Pescatello and his wife, Mary K. of Pawcatuck; his daughter, Joyce B. Ricchi and her husband, Paul of Rumford, RI; his daughter, Brenda A. Levin and her husband, Mark of Elmhurst, IL; his son, Kenneth R. Pescatello and his husband, Cedric Wesley of New Britain; his daughter, Kris D. Slocum and her husband, Kevin of Stonington; his daughter-in-law Jennifer J. Pescatello of Pawcatuck, his sister-in-law, Mary N. DiPiazzo of Pawcatuck, and 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Mark P. Pescatello. A special thank you to Meals on Wheels for the home care services they provided to Joe in the recent months. His family will receive friends Thursday, January 23rd from 5-8 at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1 (51 Williams Ave) Mystic. A funeral mass will be held Friday, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 95 Main Street, Stonington. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Pawcatuck with military honors.
